Cast gray iron is a type of cast iron which made up of carbon, silicon, and manganese. The grey iron is the most common cast iron and is named for its gray color when it fractures due to the presence of graphite flakes. Due to high thermal conductivity, excellent vibration damping, good corrosion resistance, and easy to machine, the cast gray iron is mainly used for automotive, construction, cookware, pump, valve, truck, agriculture, mining, such as gearbox housing, pump shell, valve body, motor housing, etc.
Gray cast iron: ASTM A48 Standard Specification for Gray Iron Castings
This specification covers gray iron castings intended for general engineering use where tensile strength is a major consideration. Castings are classified on the basis of the tensile strength of the iron in separately cast test bars. The casting surface shall be free of adhering sand, scale, cracks and hot tears, as determined by visual examination.
